SWIMO: guiding children with autism at the pool
According to a study by the American Public Health Association, children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are 160 times more likely to drown than others. While swimming is compulsory in French schools,
children with ASD are rarely included there. As a result, their learning is hindered, exposing them to an increased risk of drowning.
It was in this context that Swimo was developed: a pool bag adapted for children with autism. Swimo explains how to prepare the bag, where to put things, and so, when to use them around public pools. All of it, without stigmatization. As well as being socially committed, the bag is made from eco-responsible, 100% repairable fabrics.
With Swimo, children gain autonomy in a codified, regulated and stimulating environment.
This project has been selected as part of Design L'Expo 2023 and will be exhibited at La Cale 2 Créateurs from 24th January 2024 to 10th March 2024.

For any sensitive child, moving around in a codified, regulated space is a source of stress. This project is innovative as it enables children to reappropriate the usual social codes and gain access to a form of normality.
Cloé Cordey succeeded in co-constructing an activity tailored to the needs of ASD children and their parents, by meeting them before, during, and after their pool session. With this cleverly designed object, Cloé Cordey normalizes their access to the pool and helps them take part in an activity that is indispensable to all human beings.
