The China Campus of L’École de design Nantes Atlantique, open since 2008, is now located in Shanghai, in partnership with the University of the city of Shanghai. The permanent staff and the associated faculty of lecturers and course leaders are organizing the Transcultural Design China Campus Master’s program, in close relation with this fostering business environment.
An international staff for a transcultural approach
The Shanghai Campus of L’École de design Nantes Atlantique is now integrated into the Fine Arts Building on the large and attractively landscaped campus of Shanghai University. Initially started in Tsingtao, the project was moved to Shanghai in 2009 to benefit from a vast industry network and a grown design community. The original student numbers have grown nearly five-fold now, along with the number of staff. Permanent staff are Course Director Enno Hyttrek, General Secretary Marc Rambaud, Administrative Assistant Jia Quan, and Dean, Chris Ebbert. For a roll of now 60 students approximately 15 industry professionals are teaching, delivering lectures, supervising student work, and performing juror duty at the school.
A symbiotic relation with the University of Shanghai
As a hosted institution inside the very large and successful Shanghai University, L’École de design Nantes Atlantique’s operations benefit from a friendly relationship with the university and the amenities it provides, such as good transport facilities, cafeterias, air conditioned rooms, and opportunities to be immersed in a typically Chinese campus setting. Shanghai University occupies a campus of approximately 9 km2 (2223 acres). Lecturers of various, international backgrounds come directly from the vibrant design scene of Shanghai to teach courses of the Master degree curriculum in Transcultural Design, and serve as jurors. At present, lecturer nationalities are French, Brazilian, British, German, Singaporean, Chinese, Hongkongese, American, and Australian. There are lecturers from the areas of product design, communication design, interaction design, interior design, and graphic design.
A network of business partners for a truly international professional experience
A large number of partner companies provides opportunity for internships, and cooperates with the school to provide live projects. Studying at L’École de design Nantes Atlantique’s Shanghai campus requires a professional and responsible mindset with a good ability to perform teamwork, and adhering to a mature behavior regimen, as partner companies will tend to expect work and technical skills at junior designer level throughout. Internship opportunities abound not only in Shanghai but also further afield.
