Transcultural Design Asia Campus

In the current context of globalization, understanding other cultures and other value systems is a major asset for every designer. The Transcultural Design Asia Campus offers a tremendous opportunity for design students from all over the world to discover and comprehend the Chinese and Indian cultures. This MDes program encourages the exploration and acceptance of different cultures within an applied, interdisciplinary context.

Shanghai, China

The thriving metropolis of Shanghai needs no introduction: famous worldwide for its bustling business and cultural life, it is a major global center for technology, finance, transport, media, fashion…and of course, design. Home to numerous design studios and multinational companies, Shanghai is without a doubt the design mecca of Asia. The city also offers an exhilarating cultural and social scene.

Bangalore, India

One of the fastest developing countries in the world, where fine traditional craftsmanship and state-of-the-arts technology intermingle, India offers exciting prospects for designers from all fields. In the Southwest of this diverse country, the city of Bangalore stands out as a world-renowned hub for innovative technology, science, R&D and higher education. A UN report even recognizes Bangalore as the fourth leading global hub of technological innovation, together with San Francisco, Austin/ Texas, and Taipei. All this offers a stimulating “playground” for design students, notably those specialized in interaction or multimedia design. Students with other design specialties also find fantastic projects to work on, in collaboration with the many multinational companies in the area, or on more social issues. Students will also enjoy the pleasant climate all year round, and the lively local leisure scene.

A unique two-year program

Students conduct their master studies from within the realm of their design discipline, and with a spirit of integration into an Asian context. During applied projects conducted with local partner companies, students form interdisciplinary design teams working on real assignments for Asian clients.

The MDes program covers four full semesters of accredited curriculum, with 30 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credit rewarded per semester. During the first semester, beginning in September, students participate in an orientation seminar before starting their internships. The second semester offers a densely packed schedule of instruction and projects, lead by teaching staff and professional designers. The third semester is dedicated to focused, individual work on a thesis and a personal design project related to Transcultural Design. The fourth semester releases students into a final internship experience, ideally also conducted in an Asian, or at least otherwise international context, and ends with a thesis defense in which each student presents him- or herself as a professional designer. For more information on the courses, see “curriculum” and “course descriptions”.

International career prospects
This program trains students to become global players who can converse fluently in English and possibly even local, Asian languages, understanding Chinese or Indian contexts better, and most of all, steep themselves in the ability to design for clients and employers from other cultures. It is a living experience that will change its participants, often opening up unexpected, exciting international career opportunities.

Degree

As with all the MDes programs, the successful completion of this program leads to our master’s level Degree in Design, certified by the French Ministry of Higher Education.

Language

All classes are conducted in English.
Optional English language courses are offered during the second and the third semesters, to help students prepare for a TOEIC standard English language test, passing of which is a requirement to obtain the degree.
